Top 15 things to do in Malcesine

1. Scaliger Castle in Malcesine

Time seems to stand still at Scaliger Castle in Malcesine, a medieval structure with winding battlements and a tower overlooking Lake Garda. It is believed that a fortification of some sort has existed on this site since as early as the fifth century, but most of the structures visible today were added in the 13th century by the della Scala family, rulers of Verona. During that time the structure was fortified and became an important part of the region’s defensive system. Since 1902 the castle has been a national monument, and today it contains a small museum on the natural history of Lake Garda. Climb the tower for sweeping views of the lake and the town, but be careful of the clock bell, which chimes earsplittingly on the hour. Guided tours can be pre-booked by telephone.

9. Lago di Tenno, Tenno

Lago di Tenno is situated in a wooded area. Its characteristic round shape is the result of a landslide that occurred around the year 1100, which blocked a stream and caused the lake to pool. Relax beside the lake and enjoy the calm of the surrounding mountains and woods, or embark on a short hike to tour the lake. In warm weather, take a dip in the crystal clear water, or sunbathe on the shores. The lake also has two islands, one of which only surfaces at certain times of the year when the water is low.
