Best things to do in Ishigaki

Kabira Bay, the most photographed sight on the island, remains noted for its pristine white sands, blue waters, and lush vegetation. Although it's not safe to swim here due to strong currents and the presence of jelly fish, you can enjoy the picturesque vista from land, or take a ride on a glass-bottomed boat to observe the coral reefs and manta rays from the surface of the water.

Widely known for its bountiful reef teeming with marine life, Yonehara Beach remains a popular spot for amateur snorkelers looking for underwater adventure. At the back of the reef, a deep drop-off provides satisfying exploration opportunities for the more experienced divers. Check weather reports and exercise caution in the water, particularly at the break toward the back of reef where the currents can be very strong. Restrooms and showers are available on site.

Island hop with ease from Ishigaki Port Ritoh Terminal, a ferry dock and meeting place for travelers. Sit back and people watch while you wait for your ferry, or take in views of fishing boats, glass-bottom boats, and cargo ships as they go by. Both Yaeyama Kankou Ferry and Anei Kankou Ferry companies operate out of this port. If you end up waiting longer than expected, recharge your batteries at one of the terminal's convenient eateries.

Situated on a vast pastureland where farm life blossoms, Cape Hirakubozaki offers plenty of space for relaxed exploration. Roam the surrounding hills where you can sit down, take a break, and have a picnic. If you arrive at the cape via car (preferably with four-wheel drive), take the dirt roads to uncover pristine parts of nature where people rarely venture. Thanks to the abundant tame animal life here, you can observe and interact with passing horses and cows, or go fishing in the bountiful sea. The area usually gets very busy during the day, so expect scarce free parking spaces. If here at the end of the day, head to the solitary white lighthouse at the tip for expansive views of the setting sun.

See the meeting point of the East China Sea and the Pacific Ocean from Tamatorizaki Observatory, a spectacular vantage point surrounded by blossoming hibiscus. Soak up grandstand views of the island's most northerly points, stretching from the Hirakubo Peninsula to the magnificent Hanna Peak, which stands 239 m (785 ft) above sea level. Turn to the south and your eyes will see as far as Noburo Point, with glittering coral-filled waters lining the coastline.

At Kondoi Beach, explore the expanse of white coral sand and take a swim in the Pacific's warm turquoise waters. Equipped with changing rooms and showers, the crescent-shaped beach offers excellent conditions for bathing and relaxation. Head out to the wooden piers, which jut out into the shallow sea, for a clear view of the horizon. Amenities include umbrella rentals, and nearby shops and food stands sell cold beer and snacks. Round out your visit with a leisurely stroll through the nearby village, where unpaved lanes of sand lead past traditional houses with red clay roofs, grand flower beds, guardian shisa lions, and low walls made of volcanic stone. Respect the Okinawan holy places for venerating the gods (utaki) by not crossing their thresholds uninvited.

Head deep into Ishigaki Island Limestone Cave to study and admire the interesting and atmospheric geological feature. The limestone cave system was created over a period of a million years, with the site previously submerged underwater. Spot fossils of corals and shells around the cave, with a vast area open for the public to explore. A concrete path into the cave makes it accessible for children and the elderly, while lamps around the system light the interior of the cave with an atmospheric glow.
