At Sunayama Beach, observe the arch-shaped rock formed by centuries of crashing waves cutting a natural gate into the coral wall. The arch has become a symbol for this pristine beach, along with its white powdery sand and emerald green waters. Just 4 km (2.5 mi) away from the main city, the beach serves as a haven for water sport activities, as well as resting and soaking up the sun. Take advantage of some of the world's clearest waters--with 50-60 m (160-195 ft) visibility--by diving in and exploring the various coral species and marine life below the surface.

Enjoy lounging on Yonaha Maehama Beach, renowned among Okinawa beaches for its vivid turquoise water and soft, powdery sand. Despite its popularity, you’ll usually be able to find a deserted spot somewhere along the silky white beach, which stretches for 7 km (4.3 mi). Enjoy the scenic ocean views and laid-back atmosphere as you sunbathe or swim in the crystal clear waters. The stunning contrast of the pearly white sand and striking blue water provides a great background for photographs.

Cross the ocean on Irabu Ohashi, a bridge connecting the islands of Miyako and Irabu. Measuring 3,540 m (11,610 ft), the structure stands as one of the longest bridges in the world, and its island-hopping span has been impressively engineered, with construction starting in 2006 and taking nine years to complete. More convenient for locals than the ferries that used to cross the divide between the islands, the bridge still allows tourists to soak in the views at a pleasant pace. Speed limits on the bridge remain restricted, making it easier to admire the ocean, islands, and the bridge itself without holding up traffic. A viewing platform in the center provides a good place to snap some photos.

One of the longest structures of its kind in the prefecture, Ikema Ohashi Bridge links Miyakojima with neighboring Ikema Island. Stretching 1.4 km (0.87 mi) over the blue Pacific, the two-lane bridge makes for an easy trip by car between the two islands. You can also walk or bike across the bridge to take in the sweeping ocean and coastal views at a slower pace. Keep in mind that during storms and extreme weather conditions the bridge may close for safety reasons.

A long spit of land extending out into the ocean, East Henna Cape is surrounded by rocky islets and defined by rugged cliffs. The cape stretches for 2 km (1.2 mi), allowing visitors to wander along paved paths and roads to get an up close look at the distinctive coastal landscape and the solitary lighthouse on the tip of the peninsula.

With white sand that gently slopes into the shallow blue water, Aragusuku Beach offers tropical scenery and peaceful swimming. Known for its colorful coral reef, the beach also represents a great spot for snorkeling. Swim among the tropical fish and use a waterproof camera to capture the bright underwater world. During the summer, a small beachside snack bar keeps the visitors fed and hydrated, though no restroom or shower facilities are available here.

See the scenic coastlines of the two islands as you drive across Kurima Bridge, the long bridge connecting the islands of Miyako and Kurima. Completed in 1995, the impressively engineered bridge spans a total length of 1,690 m (5,544 ft), with the ocean underneath changing color along the route depending on the depth of the water and the angle of the light hitting it. To get a good photo, consider taking a walk along the whole bridge, or perhaps just a section. You can also pull up at the car parks either side of the bridge.

The small islet of Kouri Island offers peaceful beaches, quaint eateries, and great snorkeling. The island is so small you can easily traverse it on foot, but consider hiring a bicycle from the "mainland" and heading across the bridge for full autonomy. Bordered by white sand beaches and a crystal clear ocean, the island provides perfect conditions for snorkeling and observing the marine life around the unusual rock formations. You can choose from a couple of reputable restaurants serving up local dishes, though the beaches make very picturesque picnic spots. Bear in mind that many of the island's beaches remain quiet and unspoiled, with little in the way of amenities, so bring along some water and snacks to keep you going.

Step onto the super-fine, powdery sands of Toguchi no Hama, a quiet beach leading to warm, clear waters. Venture into the water and you'll quickly be able to spot various tropical fish around you in the calm sea. The beach offers limited amenities, but it does have a toilet and pay shower.
