Top 15 things to do in Bago

1. Shwemawdaw Paya

Admire the tallest pagoda in Myanmar at Shwemawdaw Paya, a glistening gold stupa that reaches an amazing 114 m (375 ft). Originally built in the 10th century, the structure has collapsed and been rebuilt numerous times due to earthquakes, each time being rebuilt a little taller. In 1930, a devastating earthquake reduced the pagoda to nothing more than a mound of rubble, and it remained that way for around 20 years. Legend has it that the original 21 m (70 ft) tall structure was built to hold two hairs of the Buddha. Explore the grounds and find a peaceful shady spot to admire the view. Arrive early to beat the crowds and the midday heat.

2. Kyaik Pun Pagoda

Discover the four sitting Buddhas at Kyaik Pun Pagoda, who sit 27 m (90 ft) tall facing different directions. Although seemingly the same, the four Buddhas have different facial expressions, decorated nails, and other small details to look out for. The legend says that the four statues were connected with four Mon sisters, who made a vow to never get married. If any broke the vow, the pagoda would collapse. An earthquake in 1930 did destroy one statue, but reconstruction brought the pagoda back to its previous glory.
