An accumulation of tree trunks over 250 million years old, Petrified Forest stands as a national monument in the center of an arid desert. Discovered in the 1940s, the fossilized tree trunks were probably carried to this spot by an extensive flood. It's illegal to carry off even the smallest bit of petrified wood from here, and tour guides must accompany all visitors.

Observe the mist-shrouded environment with fig trees, baobabs, and makalani palms at Epupa Falls. From the top of this striking set of falls--of which the longest drops 37 m (121 ft)--take in sweeping views of the Kunene valley and river. Join a guided tour of the waterfalls and nearby Himba villages, or go bird-watching and wildlife sighting. Alternatively, opt for some white-water rafting several miles upriver. Bring some food for a picnic in one of the designated areas.

Witness a piece of tradition preserved through time in the tribal ways of the people at Otjikandero Himba Orphanage Village. Visitors have the chance to interact with the Himba people through a local English-speaking guide, but be mindful of your questions and the differences between the cultures. Observe the outfits of the women of the village, their daily routines, and shop for handicrafts they made to trade with tourists. The project serves to help the people continue their ways without succumbing to the modern lifestyle, as some of the profit goes to their protection.

Meet the world's fastest land animal at Otjitotongwe Cheetah Park, a site dedicated to conserving these vulnerable wild cats in a natural habitat. Watch tame cheetahs playing with the farm's dogs--you can even pet them (at your own risk!). Then hop on a truck and drive further into the bush landscape to see wild cheetahs and their cubs feeding. A walking tour will highlight native plants like python vines and 700-million-year-old stromatolite rocks. Tourist facilities include bungalows, a camping site, a swimming pool, a restaurant, and a bar. Note that there is no main electricity supply on the farm.
