1. Ojo de Agua

Cool off at Ojo de Agua, a natural spring. Dip into the clear, cool water, brought to the spring by an underground river that has been purified by the nearby volcano. The soft, mineralized water offers an inviting moment of respite from the heat of the area, and gets constantly renewed and replenished by the spring. Separated into two main pools, the springs have seen an upswing in popularity with locals and tourists alike, drawing significant crowds on weekends and holidays. Sit on one of the deck chairs and relax under the shade of the umbrellas, treating yourself to some fresh coconut from the onsite vendors.

2. Mombacho, Granada

Hike to the gaping crater of Mombacho, a dormant volcano offering spectacular views over Lake Nicaragua and Granada. Two trails navigate their way to the summit, one far more challenging the other, with almost constant 45 degree ascents and descents. You can only take this more difficult trail with a guide, but you'll be rewarded for your efforts with views of the dwarf forest. You should, however, consider taking a guide regardless of which trail you choose, as you'll learn more about the geology and wildlife of the reserve. Be sure to stop in the cafe on the volcano and sample the local coffee, and bring sturdy boots and plenty of water for the journey.

Verdant nature trails with looming trees, lovely dark-sanded beaches, and excellent swimming conditions await at Laguna Charco Verde. Access the lush greenery here via a short walking trail, and then enjoy swimming in the calm waters. Note that while the water appears murky, this is not due to lack of sanitation but rather the sediments from the bottom of the lake mixing with the water. 6. Volcan Concepcion

Attempt to scale the majestic heights of Volcan Concepcion, a powerful presence on the Nicaraguan skyline with an elevation of 1610 m (5282 ft). Set off on the gruelling trail through a biodiverse environment, starting in deep jungle and muddy farmland before climbing toward a steep, sparse landscape with rocks and debris becoming more frequent as you get closer to the volcano's rim. Toward the summit, you will encounter strong, cold winds, and if you’re lucky, glimpse panoramic views stretching from the Pacific coast of Nicaragua to the Caribbean Sea. More often than not, thick cloud conceals this view. However, the sight of the volcano’s vast mouth and its almighty power makes the hike worthwhile, no matter the weather. Be prepared for an extremely difficult climb, bring water and appropriate footwear, and consider hiring a guide to help you.
