2. Ptuj Castle, Ptuj

Rising on a hill along the riverbank and overlooking the town, Ptuj Castle houses a museum that exhibits art, furniture, costumes, tapestries, and everyday objects from the 16th to the 19th centuries. In the western forecourt, notice the tower--the only remaining part of the first fortification most likely built in the 9th century. Archbishop Konrad of Salzburg commissioned the construction of a new castle in the 12th century, but the structure gained its final appearance in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Nowhere in Slovenia there are so many (remains of) castles and manors as there are in the river basin of Savinja. The reasons for that can be found in several facts. Firstly it is important to stress that up to 1140 this was the centre of Savinja margraviate, that a lot of property was gained by the Carinthia Krško bishops and last but not least that a lot of noble families settled in this area. Among them, the most important were certainly the mighty counts and princes of Celje.
