2. Basilica de Nuestra Senora del Pilar, Zaragoza

Experience the remarkable divinity of one of Spain’s most important churches, Basilica de Nuestra Senora del Pilar. Located in the heart of Zaragoza, the 17th-century church boasts impressive Baroque architecture of 11 cupolas and four high towers. Walk through the nine dome-topped chapels admiring original artwork, including famous works by Francisco Goya, or visit the prized statue of Our Lady of the Pillar, for whom the church is named. For a small fee, you can ride the elevator to the top of the highest tower for wide views of the city.

3. Palacio de la Aljaferia, Zaragoza

Observe a blend of Islamic and Catholic culture at Palacio de la Aljaferia, a fortified medieval palace. Built during the second half of the 11th century by the Moors, the complex was expanded in the Renaissance by the Catholic king and queen. Take in the Moorish designs in the courtyard, the ornate ceiling of the Catholic Monarch’s throne room, and Mudéjar art in the onsite museum. Guided tours are available. The site is now host to the regional parliament of Aragón, which means access to certain areas of the palace is sometimes limited. 5. Monasterio de Piedra, Nuevalos

Its deep, reflective lakes, caves, lush forest, and waterfalls, including one over 50 m (164 ft) high, make it an oasis in an otherwise arid area of Spain. Listen to birds singing and try to spot the native deer, rabbits, and boars. Head to the monastery, founded in 1194, and learn how the first piece of chocolate made in Europe was created there. 7. Catedral del Salvador de Zaragoza, Zaragoza

The site of La Seo has held many buildings—from a Roman Forum, to a visigothic church, to a mosque, and now the current cathedral. A work of many centuries, the cathedral exemplifies many different architectural styles from Romanesque to Gothic. Walk through the vast chamber and watch the light streaming through the stained glass windows. Take a look at over 20 chapels, each with a unique style, along the walls of the interior. Climb the stairs to the second floor for the tapestry museum, with some pieces dated to the 13th century.

Then you'll climb a short staircase to the top, where on a clear day, you can see all the way to the distant peaks of the Pyrenees.
