Top 15 things to do in Sant Feliu de Guixols

1. Ruins of Empuries, Costa Brava

Lying hidden until 1908, Ruins of Empuries on Spain’s Costa Brava represents nearly 2,500 years of Mediterranean history. Visit this ancient port, originally built by the Greeks, in order to see firsthand its archaeological remains and preserved structures. Marvel at the town’s large stone walls, built later by the Romans, as you wander its mosaic-lined streets. The necropolis offers a glimpse of the diversity of Empuries’ inhabitants and rulers through the centuries, and should not be missed. Stop by the city’s museum, which explains its history from pre-Christian times until the Middle Ages, and ponder the daily life of locals from era to era. An on-site parking lot is available, and the ruins can also be reached via a pedestrianized coastal trail from the town of L’Escala. The site is quite large and an extensive visit will require much walking.

11. Dali-Gala Castle Museum-House (Castell de Pubol), Pubol

Dalí and his wife Gala lived in Dali-Gala Castle Museum-House (Castell de Pubol), which has been open to the public since 1996. The artist’s eccentric additions complement the building’s medieval origins. With documentation dating back to the 11th century, the structure’s glory years fell between the late 14th and early 15th centuries, and Dalí bought it nearly in ruins in 1969. Gala remains buried here. Take a look at Dalí’s cars; note that even geniuses make pedestrian purchases like a Datsun sometimes. Plan extra time for arriving to the town and finding the museum. Consider booking a tour in your preferred language in advance.

12. Camino de Ronda, S'Agaro

Once a trail network designed to combat smugglers, Camino de Ronda is today a footpath connecting many popular beaches along Spain’s Costa Brava. Originally built in the late 19th century by Spain’s Civil Guard, the path constitutes 1.5 km (.9 mi) of Spain’s larger national coastal route. Admire the trail’s foliage and rock formations, and stop for a photo-op at one of its many designated viewpoints. Grab a drink at one of the oceanfront bars at the Sa Conca beach. Make sure to wear appropriate footwear, as sections of the walk can be steep and rocky. It may not be suitable for those with mobility issues.
