13. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, Bermeo

A small islet on the rocky Basque coast San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is connected to the mainland via a man-made bridge. The island itself hosts a nearly 1,000-year-old hermitage likely connected to the Knights Templar. Five hundred years after its construction, Sir Francis Drake sacked the hermitage. Be ready to climb the bridge’s more than 200 steps, and don’t leave any valuables behind in the car. Check online in advance to find out if the bridge is under repair and if the closer parking lot is open.

15. Basque Coast Tour: Vizcaya Bridge, Gaztelugatxe, Bermeo and Gernika

Follow the river road of Bilbao towards the coast and admire the old industrial areas that once powered Bilbao. You will enjoy the Transporter Bridge of Bizkaia, the oldest bridge of this type in the world, still active and a very much loved icon for the locals.
