Best things to do in Simpson Bay

A Simpson Bay scuba or snorkeling tour allows you to choose from a variety of marine vessels, including yachts, catamarans, self-drive inflatable boats, and a replica pirate ship, and glide on the ultramarine waters rich in tropical fish and sea turtles. Some tours combine snorkeling with hiking to the top of Pic Paradis, where you can get up close to the island's prehistoric "monsters," indigenous iguanas. Most excursions take either half or an entire day, but there are also 2-hour tours for those short on time.

Feel the rumble at Maho Beach, one of the Caribbean's most popular plane-spotting destinations. While other beaches draw visitors with their quiet setting, tourists flood this coastal spot to get exactly the opposite experience. Airplanes landing at an adjacent airport fly so low over this beach, the jet blasts can actually knock you over or blow you into the water. To spot the planes from a safe place, drop by one of the area's beach bars, many of which feature arrival/departure timetables and broadcast real-time transmissions between the landing aircraft and the airport's control tower.

Clothing remains optional at Orient Bay Beach, a lengthy stretch of powdery sand protected from the harsh Atlantic by a long reef. Located on the island's eastern coastline, the beach provides plenty of space for parasailing, windsurfing, and partying the night away. Not everyone bares it all here, but a nearby nudist resort gives the beach a naturist bent. While access to the sand and surf is free, there's a small charge for renting beach chairs and umbrellas.

Good for snorkeling or swimming, Mullet Bay Beach features a crescent-shaped bay with rocky beach areas on the east and west ends and soft, white sand in between. Rest in the ample shade, or swim to the rocky areas at the end of the beach and observe tropical fish while snorkeling. You can sample local food and drink at bars toward one end, or watch the occasional surfer ride the waves. Consider sticking around until sunset for a memorable view.

Take a dip in the calm waters and admire the famous Caribbean sunsets at the lively Kim Sha Beach. With a variety of bars, restaurants and places to kick back and relax, the beach has something for everyone. Numerous water sports and excursion operators base themselves at the beach, and most bars and restaurants provide free chairs and umbrellas when you order food and beverages. The beach can become busy around national holidays, with some bars playing very loud music.

At Carousel Gelateria and Bar, indulge your sweet tooth. The ice cream parlor, which is housed in a 16-sided white building adorned with blue tiles, features a carousel at the back, making it fun for the whole family. Before you leave, head to the gift shop, where you can purchase Italian ceramics as well as miniature merry-go-rounds.

Try to invoke Lady Luck at Casino Royale. With a lobby featuring slots that stay open 24 hours a day, and with at least one table for each game, the casino has enough going on to always be entertaining. If you are a sports better, test the Vegas odds at this attraction. Afterward, head to the lounge for drinks or entertainment--the casino features free cabaret shows three nights a week.

For a clothing-optional beach experience, visit Cupecoy Bay Beach, featuring sun-drenched golden cliffs as a backdrop. Make sure to bring all the water and snacks you'll need, along with some shade, and stake your claim on the warm sand of this nearly deserted stretch of coastline.
