Top 15 things to do in Nicaragua

1. Mombacho, Granada

Hike to the gaping crater of Mombacho, a dormant volcano offering spectacular views over Lake Nicaragua and Granada. Two trails navigate their way to the summit, one far more challenging the other, with almost constant 45 degree ascents and descents. You can only take this more difficult trail with a guide, but you'll be rewarded for your efforts with views of the dwarf forest. You should, however, consider taking a guide regardless of which trail you choose, as you'll learn more about the geology and wildlife of the reserve. Be sure to stop in the cafe on the volcano and sample the local coffee, and bring sturdy boots and plenty of water for the journey.

2. Ojo de Agua, Isla de Ometepe

Cool off at Ojo de Agua, a natural spring. Dip into the clear, cool water, brought to the spring by an underground river that has been purified by the nearby volcano. The soft, mineralized water offers an inviting moment of respite from the heat of the area, and gets constantly renewed and replenished by the spring. Separated into two main pools, the springs have seen an upswing in popularity with locals and tourists alike, drawing significant crowds on weekends and holidays. Sit on one of the deck chairs and relax under the shade of the umbrellas, treating yourself to some fresh coconut from the onsite vendors.

Pay a visit to Iglesia de La Merced, a historic site of Catholic pilgrimage. Originally built in 1539, the church was razed by pirates in the mid 17th century and rebuilt with its current Baroque facade in the 1780s. Restored with an ornate interior in the 1860s, the church today contains an image of the Virgen de Fatima, a sacred object that draws many pilgrims. Climb up the bell tower that flanks the church to gain extensive views of the city and beyond, including many major urban and natural attractions.

5. Cerro Negro Volcano, Leon

Trek up Central America's youngest volcano, Cerro Negro Volcano. Born in 1850, the volcano has erupted frequently over the decades since it first appeared, but tour groups run hikes up towards the crater during times of inactivity. The basalt cinder cone looks entirely at odds with the surrounding lush hillsides, giving the opportunity for dramatic photography. Make sure you bring lots of water on your hike up the volcano: it's hot, dry, and windy the farther you go on the 45-minute hike. The way down remains much simpler, whether you wish to walk or sled down the volcano.
