2. Iztuzu Beach 2, Dalyan

Iztuzu Beach 2 is a narrow but long stretch of sand that acts as a barrier between the Dalyan River and the Mediterranean Sea. With 4.5 km (2.79 mi) of sand, it rarely feels crowded. Often referred to as "Turtle Beach," it is a main breeding ground for these creatures, which you're sure to catch sight of. The federal government has made efforts to protect the species, leaving the area untouched and restricting public access for periods of time. While this may be frustrating for some, it is the reason the beach has retained its original beauty. That said, check ahead to make sure it's open to the public during your stay.

3. Lycian Rock Tombs, Dalyan

See Lycian Rock Tombs, one of the ancient architectural wonders of Turkey, carved into the cliffs facing the town of Dalyan. Built around the year 400 BCE, their temple-like facade indicates that the tombs were built for kings and queens. Due to safety concerns, and in order to protect the tombs from being damaged, visitors are not allowed to go up the cliff. You can, however, take a closer look by catching a boat across the river and then going for a stroll along the path at its base.

4. Kaunos, Dalyan

Explore the ancient ruins of Kaunos, once an important sea port founded in the 9th century BCE between the empires Caria and Lycia. Because of manmade alterations to the landscape, the site no longer sits directly on the coast. You'll need to join a guided boat trip or board one of the private rowing boats in Dalyan that take you across the river and walk 20 minutes to the site. Walk along the remnants of city walls up to the acropolis perched on a 152 m (500 ft) high rock, which offers vistas of the ruins, the river, the bay, and the beach. A Hellenistic-Roman theater on the slope of the acropolis is still occasionally used for performances. See the gymnasium with its Roman baths, a wind-measuring platform, and a domed Byzantine basilica. Do not miss the floor mosaics next to the basilica. Wear sensible shoes, since you'll be doing lots of walking.
