5. Tintagel Castle

The legendary birthplace of King Arthur, Tintagel Castle rests on a peninsula with a lookout over the Atlantic Ocean. Legend has it that Arthur was conceived here, after Merlin cast a spell to make King Uther look like Arthur's mother's husband Gorlois for one night. A stone with a Latin inscription thought to be Arthur's name found at the site is thought to give the legend some credence. All that is left of the castle are ruins of its walls, but these are enough to create a magical setting for sea views. Take the rugged coastal walk to see the castle and surrounding hills. Sample locally sourced crab-cake sandwiches and fresh fish and chips at the cafe.
