As the biggest city on the lake, South Lake Tahoe provides the majority of the area's nightlife, entertainment, and stores. As such, it supports a vast number of hotels and motels. Tahoe City is the lake's second most popular city among tourists, but is considerably quieter. It is a good choice for those who want to avoid the crowds of South Lake Tahoe while enjoying access to lots of amenities. Those interested in a truly tranquil stay should consider renting a cabin in one of the small towns that surround the lake. These accommodations, as well as campgrounds along the shoreline, provide an escape from the tourist vibe of the city. However, keep in mind that staying at these places will increase your drive time to major attractions.
