Top 15 things to do in Deadwood

1. Mount Moriah Cemetery

Notable characters of the Wild West and historical figures of Deadwood are buried in Mount Moriah Cemetery. Established in 1878, the cemetery's most famous graves include those of Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, and Potato Creek Johnny. Originally spread out over two cemeteries, Ingleside and a catholic cemetery, the bodies were moved to the current location in the 1880s to make space for housing on the former Ingleside location. To this day, homeowners in Ingleside occasionally find human remains on their property. You can pick up information on the people buried here at the visitor center.

9. Devils Tower National Monument, Devils Tower

Rising above the Bear Lodge Mountains, the name of Devils Tower National Monument is a result of the original name being lost in translation. The Cheyenne and Crow tribes called it "Bear's House" or "Bear's Lair." The tower is surrounded by flat land that offsets its conical shape, made up of igneous rock. Theorists disagree on exactly how it was formed, but many believe it is what remains of an ancient volcano. Up close, you'll notice that the rock is eroded into almost perfect square sections along its base. You'll also see that it is a climber's paradise. This natural wonder is the United States' first National Monument, dedicated in 1906.

13. Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Keystone

American history carved into stone, Mount Rushmore National Memorial is the work of a team of carvers, led by sculptor Gutzon Borglum. The 18 m (60 ft) sculptures of the heads of four American presidents stand 1,745 m (5,725 ft) above sea level. An iconic symbol of presidential greatness, the stone memorial has appeared in dozens of books and movies, attracting over 2 million tourists each year. Carvers took over a decade to create these mammoth faces, working from 1927 until 1941. The canyon behind the carved heads contains a vault with 16 porcelain enamel panels, which record the history of the United States and the biography of the gigantic sculpture's creator.
