Top 15 things to do in Mackinac Island

1. Fort Mackinac

Built in 1780, Fort Mackinac commemorates the island’s history as a British, French, and American military outpost. The imposing fort overlooks the harbor, and is the oldest building in Michigan. Through a number of live demonstrations, tours, special exhibits, and audiovisual programs, learn all about the fort's past and how, as well as serving as an outpost, provided a home for many members of the military and their families. The 13 other historical structures, furnished with period settings, give insight into the military training, medical treatments, and family life within the fort. Remember to bring suitable clothing for the trip as it is very much an outdoor experience. Walking shoes are recommended.

2. Mackinac Island State Park

In the quiet setting of Mackinac Island State Park, without a single car in sight, visit several historical buildings and sites. More than 80 percent of the island is a nature park, featuring open ocean views and dramatic geological formations. Cross it by foot, by bike, on horseback, or by horse-drawn carriage (no automobiles allowed). You'll have the chance to visit caves such as the Devil's Kitchen, the Skull Cave, and the Cave of the Woods. Other stops of note: a battlefield, a church, a dormitory for Native Americans, and numerous exhibits.

3. Arch Rock

A natural limestone arch in Mackinac Island State Park, Arch Rock stands 45 m (146 ft) above Lake Huron. The arch, which was created after the end of the Wisconsin glacial episode, forms a perfect window through which to view the lake. Because the sediment forming the arch is not ideal for creating natural bridges, this particular arch is uncommon in the region. Native Americans saw the arch as a place of divine power and based many stories and legends around it. To get here, you can walk or bike the trails, or take a ride in a horse-drawn carriage.

5. The Original Mackinac Island Butterfly House & Insect World

Visit The Original Mackinac Island Butterfly House & Insect World, one of the oldest exhibits of live butterflies in the country. You'll discover between 60 and 80 species of butterflies in the gardens at any one time. Every week, 350 to 400 new chrysalis (pupae) are introduced, giving you the opportunity to witness butterflies emerging throughout the day. You'll watch them open their wings for the first time and begin collecting nectar from the flowers in the 548.6 sq m (1,800 sq ft) tropical garden. After viewing the butterflies, check out the insect section, with the world's heaviest--100 g (3.5 oz) bug--(a 40 cm (16 in) stick-bug) and giant spiders.

9. Fort Holmes

Sitting atop the highest ridge on the island, Fort Holmes represents the reconstruction of an early 19th-century wood and earthen fort and one of few War of 1812 historic sites in Michigan. Notice the loopholes on the hewn log structure once used for musket and cannon fire. The hike up hill takes a bit of effort, but the scenic vistas of the Straits of Mackinac make it well worth.
