7. Dead Horse Point State Park

Imposing cliffs, geological formations, and rugged mesas define Dead Horse Point State Park. In the days of westward expansion, cowboys kept wild mustangs atop the point because it served as a natural corral. Featuring an outcropping of red rock rising 610 m (2,000 ft) above the Colorado River, the park offers more than 2,100 hectares (5,300 acres) that you can explore on foot or by bike. Bike trails cover 27 km (17 mi) along and through the canyons. Several paved footpaths offer hiking options. Keep in mind that the area's elevation of nearly 1,800 m (5,900 ft) can cause you to tire more easily than at a lower altitude.
