Offering miles of unspoiled coastline, Point Reyes Lighthouse preserves 28,750 hectares (71,000 acres) of coastal beaches, estuaries, headlands, and wildlife. Start at the visitor center for up-to-date information on the park and the activities available. For wildlife sightings, try the northern part of the peninsula, which is home to a reserve for tule elk and shorebirds. The beaches are excellent viewing spots for whales--especially for the annual migration of gray whales. The seashore provides ample opportunity for bird watching. The park offers 240 km (150 mi) of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. You can get a feel for the ancient people who lived in the area by touring the Coast Miwok Village at Kule Loklo or see what's left of a dairy ranch from the 1850s. The Point Reyes Lifeboat Station is designated a National Historic Landmark.

Enjoy an African adventure in wine country at Safari West. On the three-hour riding and walking tour, you'll see a variety of exotic wildlife, including gazelles, zebras, antelopes, Cape buffalo, and wildebeests. During the walking portion, admire colorful birds in the open-air aviary, and watch primates play in the branches on Lemur Island. After the safari, try some barbecue and local wine on the cafe's veranda. On-site lodging is available. For guided tours on an all-terrain vehicle, reserve in advance; space is limited. Custom and private tours are also available.

Get a taste of California's wine country with a tour and a tasting in and around Healdsburg, northern California's wine capital. You'll explore vineyards, rolling hills, and orchards on foot, by bicycle, or in a car. A professional sommelier will answer all the questions you might have about the art of winemaking, introduce you to the wine country's blooming culinary scene, and share local stories. In a small group of no more than 10 people you'll enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, taste wines unavailable elsewhere, and discover how they can be paired with artisanal bites of local blue cheese, charcuterie, and stuffed mushrooms. Guided tours are customizable and their duration is flexible (3-7 hours).

A sand spit dividing a bay from an estuary, Limantour Beach offers opportunities for hiking, beachcombing, and bird and wildlife watching. Many hiking trails will take you through the wetlands and around the estuary--dress warmly for cool and damp weather. Though this is a swimming beach, think twice before putting on your bathing suit and jumping into the cold water. If you'd rather stay warm and dry, walk to the tip of the spit, where you'll find a scenic spot where the river meets the bay.

Just a short drive north of San Francisco, Muir Woods National Monument protects a pristine area of about 97 hectares (240 acres) of old-growth redwood forest. Walk among the giant trees, which are some of the tallest living things on the planet. You can choose from several trails, ranging in length and difficulty. For an easy hike through a grove of trees nearly a millennium old, take the short main trail loop. If you feel a little more adventurous, put on pair of good hiking shoes and take the 3 km (2 mi) trail to the top of "Cardiac Hill," which offers unobstructed views of San Francisco and the Pacific Ocean.

Heidrun Meadery was founded in 1997 in Arcata, California. In 2008 we purchased a slightly funky and defunct dairy farm in the agricultural and culinary oasis of Point Reyes Station, Marin County, California, with the ambitious objectives of relocating the meadery nearer to the Bay Area, expanding our mead production, setting up a commercial beekeeping operation, starting a bee forage cultivation program and establishing a modest visitor’s center and tasting room.

Our tasting room is open to visitors everyday except for Tuesday. You can drop in for a tasting or reserve a spot on one of our tours. Come visit a place like no other!
