Best things to do in Tybee Island

Known as one of the America's healthiest beaches, Tybee Island Beach is a small getaway gem blessed with clear waters and soft sand. Relax on the beach or swim, or wander the area's bars, restaurants, and shops. This beach is a popular fishing spot among residents and crab hunters. On the site of one of the few remaining colonial lighthouses in the country today, Tybee Island Light Station And Museum provides the history of the structure and its human users through nearly three centuries of existence. Originally constructed in 1736 and modified over 250 years, the 44 m (144 ft) tall lighthouse changed hands multiple times in its lifetime, most recently falling under Confederate control during the American Civil War. You can explore the museum's exhibits, artifacts, and treasures from the lighthouse's history, which are housed in former gunpowder magazines in the surrounding military installation. Be aware that the 178 steps to the top of the tower pose a challenge. If you have mobility or health issues, they are best avoided.

The location of the first rifled cannon test, Fort Pulaski National Monument was an important site in the American Civil War. The success of the cannon test rendered brick forts obsolete. The Union army asked Colonel Charles H. Olmstead, commander of the Confederate garrison, to surrender before using the cannon. They hoped he would accept and prevent needless loss of life. The colonel refused to surrender, and the Union army pummeled the fort in a siege that lasted only one day. This fort was mainly used as a prisoner-of-war camp because of its isolation on Cockspur Island surrounded by a moat. You'll find sleeping quarters and rooms where the colonel signed his surrender preserved inside the fort.

Back River Beach provides great kayaking opportunities, while offering scenic views of the marsh and the smaller island. The strong currents and lack of lifeguards mean the beach is not appropriate for swimming. However, you can walk on the soft sand, fish from the wooden pier, and try to spot dolphins. During low tide, the strip of wet sand separating land and sea lures shell-seekers.

Relax in a peaceful atmosphere away from the crowds at Savannah River Beach. Fewer people visit this beach, and since it is wide, you'll have no trouble finding the perfect spot. Observe the dolphins at play, as well as the shrimp boats passing by. Minimal waves and clear water provide perfect conditions for swimming, but note that lifeguards do not patrol the beach.
