Azerbaijan's former capital surrounded by fine countryside and packed with cultural heritage, Shamakhi is one of Azerbaijan’s most historic cities and the birthplace of legendary Azerbaijani poets Sabir and Nesimi. Invaders and earthquakes have left little in the way of an old town, but the city's Juma Mosque was one of the first to be founded in the Caucasus and, in rebuilt form, is truly splendid. Across the valley, Yeddi Gumbaz houses the tombs of Shamakhi's last independent rulers.

    Shamakhi remains a minor tourist destination, so don't expect an abundance of accommodations. Most budget travelers stay at the motel on the main road to Baku, where a full restaurant serves moderately priced specialties. You'll also find one 5-star hotel in town, which features a spa center and free Wi-Fi but does not offer accommodations for unmarried local couples.
