The nearby mountain of Cerro Rico ("Rich Hill") was central to colonial Spanish silver mining, and indeed the wealth of the empire. With the establishment of the Spanish colonial mint in Potosi in the 16th century, the city flourished. Today, the main attractions in Potosi remain its elegant, regal buildings and historical machinery. When the levels of silver depleted, the once grand and wealthy city fell into a period of sharp decline. Nowadays inscribed on the World Heritage List, Potosi represents one of the most interesting and well-preserved colonial towns in the country.
