Ville Imperial
One of the highest cities in the world at 4,090 m (13,420 ft), Potosi actually rose to fame for something below the ground. The nearby mountain of Cerro Rico ("Rich Hill") was central to colonial Spanish silver mining, and indeed the wealth of the empire. With the establishment of the Spanish colonial mint in Potosi in the 16th century, the city flourished. Today, the main attractions in Potosi remain its elegant, regal buildings and historical machinery. When the levels of silver depleted, the once grand and wealthy city fell into a period of sharp decline. Nowadays inscribed on the World Heritage List, Potosi represents one of the most interesting and well-preserved colonial towns in the country. In the build up to your vacation in Potosi, plan trip itinerary minutiae using the visitor reviews, staff write-ups, and custom search fields on our Bolivia trip planning app.

Where to stay in Potosi

Because of protection from overdevelopment by UNESCO, you won't find many high-rise, newly built hotels within Potosi's city limits. Instead, visitors can choose from a good selection of colonial-era buildings housing charming hotels and welcoming guesthouses. Generally speaking, look to the south end of the center for more budget-friendly options, with little guesthouses located on residential side streets. By contrast, the more spacious area surrounding the train station has the majority of the grander hotels, set on impressive boulevards and overlooking central plazas.
