Black Rome
Nowhere are the traditions of Brazil's African-background community as strong as in Salvador, the colorful, historical capital of Bahia state. Stretched along the cliffs of an Eastern peninsula, the city of nearly 3 million people buzzes at night, as the streets fill with the sound of drums, the smell of seafood, and the amazing sight of capoeria--a combination of dance and martial arts. Founded in the mid-16th century, the city served as the Portuguese capital in South America for centuries, and much of its vibrant colonial architecture remains intact. Today, the city's rich blend of history, culture, and coastal scenery make any trip to Salvador an unforgettable one. Our expert advice on where to stay in Salvador

The majority of accommodations in Salvador fall into three distinct groupings. If you want to be close to the best historical attractions, stay in or near the old town of Pelourinho, a few minutes from the city's west-facing coastline. This also puts you in the heart of Salvador's tourist-driven nightlife. Your second option is to stay at the southwestern tip of the city, in the neighborhood of Barram, where you'll have instant access to one of Salvador's favorite beaches. Finally, look a bit farther afield to Rio Vermelho, a quieter beachside neighborhood facing south.
