An industrial port city on Colombia's Caribbean coast, Barranquilla represents the fourth-most populous city in the country. Although this important commercial and transportation hub has little to offer visitors most of the year, Barranquilla tourism booms in February during its Mardi Gras celebration. Second only to Rio's Carnival, these festivities transform the city into one frenetic--and occasionally rough--party.     Equipped to host the largest festival in the country, Barranquilla has a good set of accommodations catering to a range of tastes, budgets, and interests. Either side of Carrera 46, find pristine chain hotels and smaller independent options with extensive amenities, such as rooftop swimming pools, modern spas, and popular restaurants. Look to the more residential areas for budget-friendly guesthouses, and consider booking a rental apartment if planning on a longer stay. Economical options cluster around Paseo Bolivar, but note the area can be rather sketchy. Be sure to reserve well in advance if planning on visiting for Mardi Gras in February.
