Famagusta

4.2
Architectural Buildings · Ghost Towns · Sacred & Religious Sites
City of 365 Churches
Just east of the capital sits Famagusta, an ancient port city with archaeological attractions, as well as an abandoned quarter that is popular among tourists as a symbol of the conflict between Turks and Greeks. During medieval times, this city was an important stop along the Silk Road because it contained the deepest harbor in Cyprus. The old part of this city is surrounded by well-preserved Venetian walls, and features famous cathedrals. Though it is home to many important historical monuments, structures, and ruins, Famagusta is perhaps most famous for its southern suburb, Varosha. This area has been a dilapidated ghost town since 1974, when the Turkish military took control of it. Visitors can view these modern remnants of the ongoing tensions between the Greeks and Turks. Take the guesswork out of planning a Cyprus vacation by using our trip itinerary maker.

Our expert advice on where to stay in Famagusta

Although Famagusta was once a bustling tourist destination, the city enjoys far fewer tourists today. The hotels that remain tend to be orientated towards luxury travel, offering on-site restaurants, swimming pools, and even a private section of beach. Vacation rentals are more plentiful and often a good value, particularly if you're traveling in a large group. However, they are frequently set in residential neighborhoods. To make the most of Famagusta's nightlife, opt for a place within walking distance of Salamis Road.
