The site of one of Europe's most visited medieval castles, the small market town of Karlstejn sits in a densely forested region just a short drive west of Prague. Built in the middle of the 14th century on orders of King Charles IV, the castle long served as the hideaway for the crown jewels of the Kingdom of Bohemia. Sitting in the castle's imposing shadow, the town offers a string of shops and restaurants mostly catering to tourists. The surrounding countryside, largely unexplored by visitors, provides sweeping views of the region and a network of marked hiking trails, meandering through a landscape of steep hills and abandoned limestone quarries.
