A small spa town in Bohemia's western portion, Marianske Lazne lures visitors with mineral springs and mountain scenery. Nestled in a densely wooded area near the German border, the city features some of the country's finest examples of 19th-century architecture. Home to just over 10,000 residents, this compact town experienced its golden years between 1780 and 1914, when it served as one of Europe's top spa destinations. In those days, the resort attracted mostly European royalty and notable figures from the world of music and literature, including Goethe, Chopin, and Wagner. Today a diverse crowd of pleasure seekers throngs the area, drawn largely by the town's proximity to outstanding ski slopes and hiking trails.
