San Cristobal

4.4
World heritage site · Landmarks · Beaches
The easternmost of the Galapagos Islands, San Cristobal was where naturalist Charles Darwin and his expedition first landed when visiting the archipelago in 1835. Tourism in San Cristobal largely sticks to a Darwinian line of inquiry, with visitors drawn to the island's ecological abundance and endemic species. Sea lions, blue-footed boobies, and frigate birds are among the most popular natural inhabitants, while the surrounding waters offer sights of sharks, lobsters, and rays at a number of easily reached dive sites. With the Galapagos capital of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on the island, you'll have access to plenty of accommodations, services, and businesses during your San Cristobal holiday. Plan your vacation with our Ecuador online trip planner and discover the best things to do in San Cristobal.

Where to stay in San Cristobal

The overwhelming majority of places to stay on San Cristobal cluster in the capital city, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. The north part of town, in the area surrounding Playa de Oro, features some of the most attractive options, including resort-style hotels with extensive amenities like swimming pools, spas, and onsite restaurants. Elsewhere around town, you'll find a good mix of modern hotels offering rooms both comfortable and basic, as well as charming family-run guesthouses. Remote areas outside of the capital offer few options, though a couple of eco-friendly lodges do exist--be sure to book well in advance, due to limited availability.
