Rocamadour is only accessible by one road leading into the port town built on the face of a cliff with a large number of buildings cantilevered over the edge. This strange arrangement was the result of the discovery of a body in a nook in the cliff face during the height of the Dark Ages. The city is set in a gorge above a tributary of the River Dordogne. It is known for its historical monuments and especially for its sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which for centuries has attracted pilgrims from every country, among them kings, bishops, and nobles. Be sure to try some of the small goat's milk cheese that was awarded an appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) status in 1996.
