Tuamotu Archipelago

4.5
Scuba & Snorkeling · Swim with Dolphins · Reefs
The Tuamotus, or Tuamotu Archipelago, are the largest chain of atolls in the world. A total of 77 coral rings enclose dazzling blue lagoons teeming with fish, rays, sharks, and the giant black-lipped oysters--producers of French Polynesia's famous black pearls. Unsurprisingly, tourism in Tuamotu Archipelago revolves around exploring the lagoons by snorkeling, scuba diving, and boat. The motus (coral islets) that pepper the outer rings of the atolls rise only a few feet above the ocean's surface, creating white and pink sand beaches, sometimes crowned with coconut palms. While idyllic scenery belies the often harsh existence of the locals (barely any crops grow in the sparse soil, and water must be collected from rainfall), it is hard not to feel content with the slow pace of life and unspoiled tropical paradise that surrounds you.
