Lubeck is the only northern German city with a largely intact medieval old town comparable to sites farther south. Though considerably ravaged by World War II bombing raids, most of this port city on the Baltic Sea survived. Signs of damage were carefully removed during the painstaking post-war reconstruction efforts and its historical attractions stand much as they did centuries ago. The city center's medieval skyline, mainly composed of seven Gothic-style church towers, has earned Lubeck prestigious status as a World Heritage site. Even parts of the old city walls are intact. You can still visit two of the original four city gates. Lubeck is a city of short distances, making for easy sightseeing by foot. Outside the historic city center, the local bus lines provide easy access to all parts of Lubeck and the surrounding towns.
