Mastic Island
Rich history and scenic landscapes make Chios one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Aegean. Nicknamed the "Mastic Island" because it remains one of the world's major producers and exporters of mastic gum, Chios offers visitors a chance to explore medieval villages and age-old monasteries. Start at the ancient settlement serving as the island's center of shopping, dining, and entertainment. Alternatively, make the southwestern port of Mesta your base for touring a cluster of satellite islands reachable by boat or ferry. The island is nearer to the Turkish coastline than the Greek mainland, and as a result shares much of eastern Turkey's topography of rugged crags and fragrant citrus groves. Make your own Chios vacation itinerary, with a little help from those that know the place like the back of their hands, by using our Greece online vacation maker.

Where to stay in Chios

Though most ferries arrive in Chios Town, many of best places on the island to stay at are resort towns and historical villages located elsewhere. If you want a sample of tourist life in Chios without traveling far, stay at Karfas, just a few miles south of Chios Town. This resort destination is booming in the summer months and draws big groups to its sandy shores, where its most popular hotels are. For a less crowded spot, head to Kardamila, a resort town on the island's northeastern coast that isn't swarmed by tourists. To explore the southern coast, consider staying in the medieval village of Mesta, which makes a great base for travel and has a number of small guesthouse options and boutique accommodations for visitors. To head off the beaten path, try the hilltop village of Volissos, a large town with charming bed and breakfasts.
