Most visitors come to Khajuraho to see the 1,000-year-old erotic rock carvings at a cluster of World Heritage-listed Hindu and Jain temples. Divided into three groups of temples, these fine stone structures lie at the foot of the Vindhya Mountains and rank among India's most popular tourist attractions. Audio guided tours of Khajuraho involve explanations of some carvings in English, as well as historical and architectural background. While most sightseeing in Khajuraho revolves around some two dozen surviving temples, you can also observe village life or take a yoga class and visit a local archeological museum. Combine the temple tour with an elephant or jeep safari around the nearby national park, and stop by the town bazaar for handcrafted miniatures of the famed carvings.     The worldwide fame of the Khajuraho temples has given rise to a vibrant tourist industry; consequently, this relatively small town offers a range of accommodation facilities. Most hotels concentrate along the airport road and main temple road, varying from luxury international chains to low budget lodgings. Five-star deluxe outlets with spas, pools, landscape gardens, and views of temples tend to lie closer to the airport, while economy accommodations surround the eastern group of temples and follow the Khudar River. Some family-friendly, affordable establishments have good views of the temples, and a few of the mid-range hotels feature lovely rooftop restaurants.
