Within 25 km (15.5 mi) of both Singapore and Malaysia, several cultures meet on the highly developed industrial island of Batam. Small but densely populated, the island of more than one million people became part of a special economic zone in 2006, allowing Batam to trade with Singapore without tariffs and further increasing the island's growth and industrialization. Batam tourism revolves around shopping and urban sightseeing more than nature, although you can find some family resorts along the coast. The island does have its seedy side as well, with high levels of gambling and sex tourism, although authorities have cracked down on this in recent years. Our expert advice on where to stay in Batam

Batam offers accommodations ranging from small hotels and apartments to large beach resorts, but without much in the budget department. By far the most popular spot to stay is Nagoya in the center of Batam city, on the north coast of the island. There you'll find plenty of activity, including a range of bars and restaurants, as well as close proximity to the beach. For something a bit quieter, try a spot close to the beach in Nongsa, on the island's east coast.
