Established on the same grounds as Kylemore Castle, Kylemore Abbey monastery was founded in 1920 for Benedictine nuns who escaped from Belgium during World War I. The nuns ran an international boarding school and a day school to provide Catholic education to young girls until 2010, when the school finally ceased operation. The nuns continue to reside in the abbey and offer warm hospitality to the many visitors who come to see the site each day. The best views of the abbey come from across the calm lake out front, with greenery surrounding the building. Part of the complex includes a Victorian walled garden, where visitors can explore nearly 2.4 hectares (6 acres) of flowers.
