A star fort built by the Venetians in the 16th century, Palmanova has been an Italian national monument since 1960. The town's exemplary Renaissance walls with nine points were included on the World Heritage List in 2017. Designed to be a military station for the Venetian Republic, the fortified city provided much-needed protection from the expanding Ottoman Empire for several centuries. The main attraction in Palmanova today is the city's main square, overlooked by a 17th-century church and monumental gates.
