Green Heart of Italy
Though it features Etruscan defensive walls and a medieval town center, Perugia is perhaps best known for its fine chocolate and annual chocolate festival. This chocolate-lover's paradise also is home to two large universities and is a melting pot for students from around the world. Perugia has several attractions, including many museums housing masterpieces by notable High Renaissance artists such as Perugino and Raphael. Most of the popular places to visit are at the top of the hill in the historic center. This area is extremely difficult to access by car; it's best to explore on foot. You may want to try Perugia's popular Minimetro, an automated mass transit system with stops at several major stations, including one at the historic town center. Make Perugia central to your Italy travel plans using our Italy trip planner.
