Perhaps the island's best-known hot spring resort, Noboribetsu has a long history of tourism. The quality of the water from the hot spring here has long been touted, with a number of the "ryokan" (traditional Japanese guesthouses) in town open for generations. Many of the ryokan have onsite bathhouses, known in Japan as "onsen," which use the water from the springs in a range of spa treatments.
