Taketomi-jima

2.4
Landmarks · Marinas · Historic Walking Areas
A tiny island in the Yae-yama archipelago, Taketomi-jima enjoys popularity as a beach getaway, best known for its stretches of "star sand"--sand made up of tiny star-shaped exoskeletons of ancient fossils. Sightseeing on Taketomi-jima can include a walk along its streets lined with traditional red-roofed houses, or taking a ride in a water-buffalo cart. Laid-back, quiet, and untouched by recent developments, the island doesn't offer much in the way of entertainment, but the scenic beaches, picturesque sunsets, and freshly caught shrimp may be all you need. Our expert advice on where to stay in Taketomi-jima

The tiny, quaint island of Taketomi-jima is known for its variety of "minshuku," traditional Japanese bed and breakfasts, most of which offer futons, basic amenities, and often home-cooked meals, as well as shared bathhouses. Most visitors come on a day trip from Taketomi-cho or Ishigaki, where you can easily find a room in one of the guesthouses and experience a peaceful night on the small islands, without the crowds of day tours.
