Wadi Rum

4.5
World heritage site · Deserts · Nightlife
Tourism in Wadi Rum revolves around UNESCO-protected desert scenery and spectacular limestone rock formations following a dry river bed, which in World War I served as the headquarters of a British-inspired Arab revolt against the Ottomans. The area can be best experienced by taking a camel or horseback ride and staying in a Bedouin tent and camping under the stars, before exploring ancient ruins and enjoying home-cooked meal in the desert. Rock climbers and other lovers of eco-tourism will be pleased with the opportunity to climb massive rock formations, while paragliding remains equally popular in the area. Use our Jordan route planning app to arrange the hows, wheres, and whens of your trip to Wadi Rum.

Where to stay in Wadi Rum

Oriented towards sightseeing in the desert, Wadi Rum has no hotels, instead offering a range of campsites with Bedouin-style tents. These options range from sleeping under a thin blanket by a cave, to spending the night in a comfortable cabin. You can also put up your own tent in designated areas, although you'll miss out on the traditional meals and tea provided by many campsites. These accommodations follow a line from northeast to southwest along the dry river bed, while a number of agents organize wilder trips where you can go bivouac camping or sleep under the stars. Visitors who prefer more luxurious conditions can always opt to stay in the more touristy Aqaba area.
