Finnmark

4.2
Geologic Formations · Churches · Nature & Wildlife Tours
Finnmark stretches across the very top of Europe and serves as home to Norway's indigenous Sami people. The nation's largest county by area, Finnmark remains a sparsely populated land of barren coastal regions and vast inland plateaus that are interspersed by lakes and river valleys. Indented by large fjords, the county's coastline stretches for nearly 7,000 km (4,500 mi) and contains nearly a fifth of its total population. Travel along Finnmark's jagged coast to discover the region's secluded fishing communities, or venture deeper inland to explore its stark plateaus and meet the Sami reindeer herders. For a more urban experience, head to Alta, known as the "Aurora Borealis City" and famed for its prehistoric rock carvings. Take the guesswork out of planning a Norway vacation by using our trip itinerary maker.

Where to stay in Finnmark

The northernmost county in Norway, Finnmark is huge in area but sparse in population. The main cities are Alta, Berlevag, Batsfjord, Hammerfest, Karasjok, Kautokeino, Kirkenes, Lakselv, Vadso, Vardo, and Oksfjord. Alta, the largest city in the county, is known as the "Aurora Borealis City." Far above the Arctic Circle, Finnmark has an abundance of unique accommodations made of snow and ice during the long winter. Staying in a lavvu hotel, a traditional Sami tent, is another way to experience authentic culture in this northern land. Lavvu hotels are mainly found in Kautokeino.
