Town of Kings and Fishes
A mere 32 km (20 mi) from Lisbon, the coastal town of Cascais has a long history of entertaining royals. Its royal history and scenic beaches draw a wide variety of tourists to its sandy shores. Though it began as a small fishing town, Cascais started to attract nobility in the 19th and 20th centuries. Today, it offers luxury hotels and less expensive options for visitors, who enjoy sunbathing, sailing, cycling, and surfing, among other activities. This coastal getaway is also home to museums, gardens, boutique shops, and restaurants, as well as a lively bar scene. Take a peek at our online itinerary creator: Cascais and its charms laid bare and easily scheduled.

Our expert advice on where to stay in Cascais

The seaside resort town of Cascais, one of Lisbon's wealthiest suburbs, offers solid options for both enjoying the sun and surf and getting away from the bustle of the capital. By staying right near the beach, you'll be within easy walking distance of both the soft sand and the restaurants and bars of the town center. Most of the bigger hotels along the waterfront and near the marina provide balconies and sweeping views over the ocean as well. However, you can also check into a smaller guesthouse for a lower bill and equally good location in the center of town. Grabbing a room at one of the guesthouses or hotels in nearby Estoril offers a similar beachfront experience not far from Cascais itself, plus this location offers more in terms of choice.
