Xinbei, also known as New Taipei City, stands as a newly founded part of the wider Taipei metropolitan area, stretching up from the capital to the island's northern coast. Though officially a new entity, the area was inhabited long before it gained its name in 2010, formally breaking away from the capital. Qing-era sites, including temples, old mining towns, and gardens represent some of the main places to visit in Xinbei, along with several fishing towns and beaches along the coast, and mountainous areas inland.
