Pamukkale

Cotton Castle
A popular spa since the second century BCE, the modern city of Pamukkale continues to draw worldwide attention with its hot springs and travertines--naturally formed calcite bathing pools. World Heritage status makes the area one of the country's most visited tourist destinations, boasting a temperate climate for most of the year. The remains of the ancient Greco-Roman city of Hierapolis sit right above the otherworldly travertines, providing history buffs with a chance to briefly visit ancient times. Pamukkale can get extremely crowded with day-trippers arriving for a quick swim, but you can avoid them by visiting the travertines at sunset, the quietest time of day. Our expert advice on where to stay in Pamukkale

The small town of Pamukkale renowned for its white, mineral-rich volcanic travertines features quaint, family-run guesthouses and hotels at affordable prices. Most offer swimming pools, which appear milky from the local water, and delicious Turkish food. Just north of the city in the town of Karahayıt, you'll find more upscale accommodations and resorts. In Karahayıt, luxury hotels and spas offer visitors therapeutic thermal pools and natural springs. Pamukkale is the closer option if you're visiting to see the nearby ruins.
