A comfortable base for exploring the historical region of Cappadocia in the central part of the country, Urgup remains best known for its striking architecture of stone-cut buildings. Despite its relatively small size, the city draws an international crowd of tourists with pulsating nightlife and posh hotels, many built in or near the region's age-old cave dwellings. Intent on striking a good balance between preserving its small-town charm and meeting the demands of a growing number of foreign visitors, Ugrup features a compact-but-busy town center, a good place to look for traditional handmade carpets. To discover the region's famed fairy chimneys from the air, join a guided hot air balloon tour. To arrange what you want to do in Urgup, use our Turkey trip planner.

Where to stay in Urgup

Ürgüp serves as a well-rounded alternative for a place to stay when visiting the neighboring rock sites of Cappadocia. Unlike other towns, Ürgüp offers upscale hotels housed in traditional old mansions formerly owned by prominent local families. There are no hostels here, but you'll find guest lodging created from converted old houses as well, which are often just as affordable. Ürgüp also boasts a thriving nightlife, something that's missing from other surrounding villages.
