The Gunnison River has been hard at work over the past two million years, carving out the sheer cliffs and towering spires that today make up Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. The canyon stretches for 77 km (48 mi), with the deepest and most striking 19 km (12 mi) section sitting inside the park. Numerous short hiking trails meander along the northern and southern rims of the canyon, making it relatively easy to peer down into the chasm at the river far below. You can also hike to the bottom of the canyon, though these trails are very strenuous and unmaintained. With the canyon serving as the sole attraction, you can see the significant parts of the park in a day.     If you don't stay in one of the two campgrounds in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, the nearby town of Montrose serves as the second-most convenient option. Here you'll find numerous economy motels and a few small bed and breakfasts and inns. Many of these are only about 16 km (10 mi) from the park's south entrance. Delta sits north of Montrose and offers a similar range of accommodation types. Here, you'll be about 40 km (25 mi) from the park. About 56 km (35 mi) south of the park, the small town of Ouray offers a couple of hotels, some of which sit in restored brick Victorian buildings that characterize the town's architecture.
