A desert town with an interesting history, Boulder City was created by the United States government in 1931 to provide housing for workers building the Hoover Dam, a famous Depression-era project. Today, the surprisingly green city boasts a laid-back holiday atmosphere, plenty of shopping and dining opportunities, and several golf courses. Although just a half-hour drive from Las Vegas, you won't find any casinos here, as it is one of only two cities in Nevada to prohibit gambling. Staying in one of downtown’s comfortable hotels keeps you close to the town’s stores, restaurants, and museums while on vacation. There are several theme hotels to choose from, reminiscent of Las Vegas’ glitz and playfulness. A motel located on the outskirts of town is often a cheaper option, and will usually provide convenient access to the highway if you are passing through.
