Captain Cook
A small town with big ocean views, Captain Cook lies on top of an ancient fault line that was responsible for creating the nearby Kealakekua Bay thousands of years ago. Named after the unfortunate explorer who landed and died nearby, the site remained part of a sprawling private ranch for most of its history. Today, the town of about 3,000 serves as a convenient base for snorkeling, kayaking, and scuba diving. Because it sits between 240 m (800 ft) and 610 m (2,000 ft) above sea level, the town and surrounding area is ideal for growing coffee. To taste some of the region's finest brews, visit one of Captain Cook's many roadside coffee roasteries and tasting rooms. Where to stay in Captain Cook
To take advantage of the best recreational activities Captain Cook has to offer, book your stay at one of the area's private ranches or vacation villas. Though pricey, these establishments often provide impressive amenities like guided tours of the area as well as complimentary spa treatments, fitness facilities, and access to private beaches. For something a bit less expensive, consider one of the city's budget-friendly bed and breakfasts. These places often offer sweeping ocean views that make up for what they may lack in amenities.
