Grand Rapids
Furniture City
The second largest city in Michigan and a hub of furniture manufacturing, Grand Rapids bears the nickname "Furniture City." However, the destination's original name came from the rapids of the Grand River that once ran through the downtown area. The rapids have been tamed, and the banks of the river serve as a location for outdoor activities like hiking and cycling. Adjacent to downtown you'll find Heritage Hill, one of the biggest historical districts in the United States, with 1,300 buildings that represent almost every type of American architecture, from Prairie to Greek Revival. The city was ranked the number one U.S. travel destination by Lonely Planet in 2014 for its 25 craft breweries, Winter Beer Festival, and world-class art attractions. Where to stay in Grand Rapids

Only five hotels provide lodging downtown, but each charms its guests with a distinctive character. A small collection of bed and breakfasts and inns populate Old Town. These hotels are a five-minute walk from the city's main attractions, top restaurants, and conference centers, so they tend to fill up fast. Book a room early to ensure you get the lodging of your choice. There are also hotel chains near the airport and in residential areas; public transport and taxi service link these to the city's downtown.
