Harpers Ferry
With a population of less than 300, Harpers Ferry is as quaint as they come. The land was first colonized by Quakers, but by 1761 a ferry from Potomac to Harper was established, making the destination the first stop for settlers moving into the Shenandoah Valley. When George Washington was president of the Patowmack Company, he passed through the village while surveying the Potomac River. The destination was also the site of John Brown's raid, an attack against the town led by a radical abolitionist. A preserved fort dating from the period is named after the raid.
